Thankful Thursday - Sleep

Dave works rotating shifts and so there are often long stretches of time when he is on night shift and I am at home alone with Punky.

I am used to Dave being gone all night when he is on night shift, or not getting home till about 11pm when he is working afternoon shift (the worst of the three shifts he works) so it's never been a big deal being in the house by myself at night.
My awesome husband and I at lunch for his
Mum's 60th back in May

However since having Punky I must admit the times when he has been on night shift have been a little harder (and a little longer!) because I don't have his back-up, I don't have him to tag-team with me in getting up to Punky through the night.

The good thing about night shift though is that he would be home by about 8am (after going to the gym) which meant he would take Punky, give her breakfast and spend the morning with her, and I'd go back to sleep and Dave would wake m up about 10am-ish when he was ready to go to bed. It works really well.

However I have to admit that since going back to work three days a week it's been a little harder with him on night shift and having to get up through the night to the munchkin, then get up early for work and be expected to concentrate on doing stuff as well. At least when I was just working at home I could do it in my pj's and nap if when Punky did.

I've written a few times before about sleep since Punky was born and I have to say I am very pleased with how well she has been sleeping this week (although of course even thinking about blogging this means she will have a shocker tonight!) and with Dave being on day shift till the end of the month I've found I've been sleeping deeper at night.

It must be a subconscious thing, or maybe my body just really needs the extra sleep, because there have been a few times where Dave has had to wake me up around 4 or 5am to give Punky a feed because he's been trying to get her back to sleep for half an hour and she just won't settle. She's even woken up a few times through the night before those early morning feeds and I haven't even stirred, Dave has gone in to her.

I am so lucky that I have a husband who is so hands on and doesn't act as though looking after Punky is all my job, that he sees it as being just as much his responsibility as mine. I'm so lucky to have a husband that will go in and settle our daughter when she stirs instead of waking me up to do it like I've told him to on the nights when I don't have to get up for work the next day.

On Monday morning he even got up half an hour before his alarm and went in and rubbed some bonjela on her gums and got her back to sleep before he got ready for work. He starts at 6:30am! What a guy!

So today I am thankful for an awesome husband and sleep. Because one wouldn't happen without the other!

Sleeeeeep, I am thankful for it too. It took about 15 months for it to come back in full-night cycles for us! Now when I'm woken up in the middle of the nigh I'm a zombie! Your hubby sounds like a keeper for sure! Mine is very hands-on, too, and even cooks, does laundry and grocery shopping! Things are very evenly split in our household! Hope you get some long-sleep-nights soon!

What a lovely, wonderful husband you have! I love to read about hands-on dads, it makes all the difference in the world to know you're part of a team, doesn't it? xx

Your hubby sounds like mine, he also does the cooking, and we split laundry and grocery shopping. It's a good deal and I've never understood why some women have to do all the housework, especially if they also do work outside the home as well.

It certainly does, I couldn't do it without him

That sounds like a pretty good deal. I reckon that's what it will be like in this house too when we decide to have number two
