My Top 5 Fave TV Shows... Right Now
I've posted before about my Top 5 fave TV shows (November 2009) here, and more recently my Top 10 fave TV shows (July 2012) here. They were both a sort of "of all time". So today, for The Lounge, where those lovely lizards are talking their favourite things, I thought I'd hit ya with my top 5 fave TV shows of the here and now. What I've been watching and loving lately.
It's much more subdued than the Aussie version and way more focused on the cooking rather than trying to build false tension and drama. When a contestant gets kicked off they walk straight out, no heartfelt, teary goodbyes or anything like that. They get a 10-second piece to camera about holding their head high and that's it. It's so refreshing!
One thing I love about the British version is the little history segment they have each episode, looking at the origins of a certain type of baked good and where it came from. It's really fascinating! I'm currently watching the 2012 series (don't tell me who wins if you know!) and I hope they play the 2013 series as soon as this one ends.
I love the social element to it, the way people play the game and their justifications for doing what they do. It's a really interesting look at a cross-section of people, and it becomes clear pretty early on who has what it takes, socially, to be a Survivor. This current season of Blood vs Water is so interesting as it sees couples (husbands and wives, mothers and daughters, partners, brothers, etc) competing with and against each other and it's bought a whole new element to the game. Previous players have come with a loved one and it's interesting to see the dynamics and the ones who are willing to sacrifice their place in the game to save a loved one.
Season 4 is currently airing on Foxtel and it is just as good as the previous 3 seasons. This seasons sees them tackling the issue of a flu virus spreading through camp, and how this new threat plays out in a post-apocalyptic world is pretty scary and interesting.
I have also started reading the first book in the Song of Ice and Fire series that the show is based on and loving it so far. I was aware of the books long before the TV show came out thanks to working in the bookshop and always wanted to read them but never got around to it. Now I can't put it down!
So there you have it folks, some of my favourite TV shows at the moment. What's everyone else watching right now?

5. British Masterchef
I don't mind the Aussie version of this cooking comp show but it's so over-dramatised that I fast-forward through a lot of it (70% of it is just crying!). I've heard people say how much better the British version is so when I saw them advertising the 2013 series on the Food channel I set it to record.
The hosts and judges on The Great British Bake Off. I have a wee crush on Mr. Hollywood I must admit! |
4. The Great British Bake Off
I watched the 2011 series of this before the Aussie version was on a few months ago and I loved it. The Aussie one was ok, but again they tried too hard to create drama and tension which took away from the baking, which is the whole reason why I watch bloody cooking shows. I don't cook much myself so living vicariously and all that! One thing I love about the British version is the little history segment they have each episode, looking at the origins of a certain type of baked good and where it came from. It's really fascinating! I'm currently watching the 2012 series (don't tell me who wins if you know!) and I hope they play the 2013 series as soon as this one ends.
Survivor Blood vs Water contestants. I'm hoping for Aras and his bro to win or Colton's boyfriend |
3. Survivor
I have been a massive Survivor fan since the very first season aired in 2000. The finale of the first season was played the night I got my licence and driving to my girlfriend's house to watch it was the first time I ever drove anywhere by myself!I love the social element to it, the way people play the game and their justifications for doing what they do.
I seriously hope Daryl survives the season, he's my favourite! |
2. The Walking Dead
This show did feature in my Top 5 fave shows of all time post as it really is. There is just something about it that is so compelling and it has nothing to do with the zombies. Really, in the grand scheme of the The Walking Dead world, the zombies are their smallest problem.Season 4 is currently airing on Foxtel and it is just as good as the previous 3 seasons. This seasons sees them tackling the issue of a flu virus spreading through camp, and how this new threat plays out in a post-apocalyptic world is pretty scary and interesting.
Dave and I are well truly on this bandwagon now! |
1. Game of Thrones
I know, I know, we are a little late to this party. Three seasons have been and gone now and thank God a fourth has been commissioned. Dave and I have just watched the first three back to back in about 2 weeks and we are in love. It lived up to the hype I've been hearing and reading.I have also started reading the first book in the Song of Ice and Fire series that the show is based on and loving it so far. I was aware of the books long before the TV show came out thanks to working in the bookshop and always wanted to read them but never got around to it. Now I can't put it down!
