Top 5, no wait! Top 10 Favourite 90s Movies // Entertainment
In fact it was so hard once I started thinking about it that I've even had to split it in to two posts, with one that is going to be dedicated solely to my favourite 5-10 90s kids movies! The 90s covered me from the ages of 8 to 17, which I think you'll all agree is a pretty important part of a person's life. So much happens in that 10 year period of going from a child to a teenager, and the culture of the time is often what people carry with them for the rest of their lives.
So without further ado, I present to you, the hardest Top 5 I've had to come up with so far, that it ' actually a Top 10 (and actually even Top 11 if we want to get technical!)... here it is...
Top 10 90s Movies
10. Hercules Returns
I first saw this movie when I was 14 and to this day I still quote lines from it. It was released in 1993, is an Australian (mostly film) and revolves around a couple of guys who buy an old picture theatre, and decide on opening night to replay the last movie that was shown there before it closed decades earlier. The only problem is, when the film turns up, it's all in Italian, with no subtitles, meaning that the 3 main characters then have to dub the entire film themselves, live. All I can say about this movie is do yourself a favour and watch it. It's gold!
9. BASEketball
This 1998 movie starring the creators of South Park was, at the time, one of the funniest, rudest movies I'd seen. If you're at all familiar with South Park then you have some idea of the types of jokes you can expect to find here, but it has a lot of heart, as they fight against a businessman who wants to screw them, and the game they created (a hybrid of basketball and baseball in case the title didn't make that clear enough!). Steeeeeve Perry!
8. Titanic
This movie needs no introduction from me. I saw it 4 times at the cinemas and managed to get through every sitting without going to the bathroom. I don't think I could boast that these days! What more can I say, it had everything I loved in a movie as a teenager: Leo Dicaprio and a love story.
7. Dazed and Confused and Empire Records
It was a real toss-up for the number 7 spot between Dazed & Confused and Empire Records, and in the end I just couldn't separate them, so I've included them both. In my angsty teenage years both of these movies, despite being set in America and in very different conditions to what I lived in, really had something that I connected to and I couldn't leave either off the list. In fact, I could even go one further and add Reality Bites in here as well.
6. Wayne's World
I'm pretty sure I've mentioned on many occasions my love of Wayne's World. If you haven't seen Wayne's World then stop what you are doing right now and somehow, someway get your hands on a copy and watch it tonight. It is filled with some of the best 90s comedy lines, and includes my all-time favourite line from a movie: If you're gonna spew, spew in to this!
5. Jurassic Park
Now this one could arguably be on the kids list, and chances are I will probably include it on that one as well. But to not include it here would just be so wrong. Dave and I were talking about this movie while I was writing this, and he summed up perfectly how I think most people my age felt about this movie when it first came out: "It was the greatest movie I had ever seen, ever, up to that point in my life." Dave reckons that at the time he even thought it was better than Terminator 2, which is his all-time favourite movie.
I felt the same way when I saw Jurassic Park. I'd never seen anything like it before, and I am a little bit sad that I won't ever see a movie that I will feel so damn amazed and awed by, as I did when I saw that movie on the big screen at 10 years of age. If I do, it's gonna have to actually have smell-o-vision and stuff I can physically touch while watching it. Or actual, real-life dinosaurs!
4. Twister
This is one of the cheesiest movies, but even now I still love a good viewing of Twister. I own the DVD, and I still have the VHS copy of it too! I was always one of those kids that loved learning about things like volcanoes and cyclones at school, so this movie totally hit the spot with me at 14 years of age.
3. Speed
What can I say about Speed? Only that for me, it's the best action movie of the 90s. Period. Sandra. A super-hot Keanu. A storyline that cracked along with dialogue that made even Keanu sound more than one-dimensional! It had everything and more, and oh, that kiss scene at the end, when Sandra and Keanu have escaped off the train. I'll put my hand up and admit that featured in at least 75% of my dreams in the first year after seeing it!
2. Romeo + Juliet
It was really super hard to split my number 1 and 2 movies. Really slim. But the movie I've given the top spot to gets it purely based on re-watchability.
Romeo + Juliet, the ultimate angsty teenage girl love story, gets a modern update with the hottest cast and soundtrack of the decade. And make every high school English teacher rejoice that finally their students might understand some of the archaic English Shakespeare used. I know it helped me!
This was the movie that made me fall in love with Leo and embark on a quest to see every film he had ever been in. This movie led me to love affairs with movies such as What's Eating Gilbert Grape and The Basketball Diaries, and is still up there as one of my all-time favourite movie soundtracks.
1. Clueless
I can honestly say I don't know any female, who was a teenager in the 90s, that doesn't love this movie. Now obviously this has a lot to do with the kind of friends and family I have, but still. Every girl I knew at 14 wanted to be Cher Horowitz. Or at least have Josh for a step-brother. Most definitely Alicia Silverstone's defining role, and sadly for her, one that she was never gonna be able to live down, because for an entire generation of women, she will forever be Clueless. Nothing she has done before or since has ever, or will ever, be as dope.

I could go on and on
My number 1 90's movie is definitely Dangerous Minds. It was kind of my coming-of-age movie, I was 15 when it came out. And I also love Independence Day, altho that's almost into the 00's.
For me, I'd have to put Empire Records as my favourite 90's movie, only just outdoing Reality Bites as 2nd favourite. There was a year during high school where every day after school, I'd watch one of those two movies when I got home in the afternoon. It was my dream to work at Empire Records! It still is! I can't tell you how sad it makes me to see the decline of "music stores", knowing that I'll probably never get to work in one now :(
I remember seeing Twister at the movies, I had chills, so good (for the time)! And Romeo and Juliet, that will always be timeless.
